sluggish

i have an 81 chevy p/u with a 350ci engine. the problem is that it seems to have no power. adjusted the carb and didnt help. i put a timing light on it and the timing seems to jump about 5* ahead then back again. and i can also hear the exhaust "popping" every once in a while. i checked the plugs and they looked a little carboned up. its got brand new wires. there doesnt seem to be any problems with the vacume advance on the dist. and when i reved the engine the timing still bounced.any ideas will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

timing

When you check your timing with your light, did you plug up the vacuum advance? Im not sure where you intial timing should be - somewhere in the teens. 10 would be a good place to start. Then loosen and turn your dist., advancing it a little, lock it down and try it out. The jump is your vacuum advance coming in when you rev it. You can't time it properly with the vacuum advance connected.
