sm465 (muncie??) HeLp

hey guys
another question about this tranny. 4 speed. I cant find anything about the gearing. My buddy told me before it was an NP420 which was wrong, thats a big old truck tranny. And This is from a 2wd. He thinks its a muncie but i was just gonna put a post on this site and see if anyone knew any better. Most info as possible! also i got a 350 horse chev 350 that i want to use with this tranny and just wondering if the tranny can take it. Just hoping the tranny isnt a SaG and the guy is trying to LOwball me. thanks!

the sm465 will take anything you can throw at it. Its found in 1/2 ton and up trucks and Blazers. If you are building a rock crawler or fifth wheel puller, its great. It has a killer low first gear, (6.55 to 1) great for pulling stumps and 3 foot wheelies, but in a street car, good luck. Its a truck trans and not for cars. Very slow to shift too.

read about it here.

Sm465

Actually the SM465,made by Spicer, is found in trucks, both 2 and 4 wheel drive, from half ton up to at least 1 ton. It replaced the Spicer SM420 in GM's line and is stronger, heavier and quieter, and has a provision for a back up light switch. However, for rock crawling etc. the 420 has much deeper reduction gears and a more even gear spread, making it very popular with the extreme offroad crowd. As stated though, neither of these boxes would be good choices for an auto. For a car,a better choice would be a T-5 out of a late model Camaro or Firebird. It has 5 speeds with a 5th gear overdrive, and is strong enough to handle a fairly hot smallblock or a warmed over bigblock if not driven by a maniac. If brute strength is what you need,a Muncie M-22,a Super T-10 or a Liberty 5 speed are all good medicine. The Liberty,in particular,is built for very high performance engines and is a VERY tough tranny.
