Small base circle in a 434SBC??

Hey everyone I'm new to the board and I'm going to try and keep most of my questions simple. My name is Dave and i live in Lexington,SC. I'm 28 and have been working on cars since I was about 10. You all know where you started. I started with an oil pan with gas and greasy nuts and bolt. I was told to clean them. Thats where I got hooked on the idea of hot rodding. I've been able to do most everything (except automatic trannys) without much help.
My questions will be on my current project, 1993 S-10 with a 434sbc set up. It will have a tunnel ram, (2) 450-600 cfm carbs, JE pistons, Eagle 6" H rods, Eagle 4" stroke crank, mechanical roller cam, lifters and rockers, Dart Iron Eagle Platinum 230cc 2.08 1.60 heads, 350 tranny, 3500+ stall, 3.73 gears. Do I need to run a small basecircle cam?? If I need to run a small basecircle what will i have to do to the valve train? ie; +.100 on the valves, pushrod length and so on.... I have 90% of my parts purchased and am hearing all kinds of different answers. I figure my HP to be around 500-525 real world numbers not DD. This is my first post and am sorry so long but figured you could help....Thanks everyone! Pics coming soon.

You will need a small base cam if running stock rods. I don't like grinding off that much bolt head If you get H beam rods from China then you might have a few problems with clearance.

Unless you get an aftermarket block with a raised cam tunnel your best to get the small base cam. I hope your not doing this with a stock block as it's going to be a lot of grinding to get the crank in there. Breaking through is always an issue. You won't know, neither will anyone else, how the pushrod length will be until you have the topend assembled and check length. That is almost the last part we buy on a motor.

small base circle cam

you will either have to trim your rods so no. 1 and 6 will clear or get a sbc cam. rollers are no problem. flat tappet cams are. crane and others will not grind a sbc flat tappet cam because they say they will wear out to fast. comp cams will but the price is double. i have a friend with a sbc in a drag only car. best way to go.

so if i clearance rods #1 and #6 i would be fine with a standard mechanical roller set up? with mech. roller lifters and 1.6 ratio roller rockers? if the machine shop goes through anywhere on my block for any reason they just bought it. Ill start over with a Dart block. Thanks Dave

Your machine shop should have the entire rotating assembly there to check for clearance. They cannot possibly know where to remove material and how much to remove without the parts in in the block, unless they're using identical parts for fitting, which is doubtful.

Just grinding 1 & 6 won't do with a 4" stroke. Even with rods designed for a stroker engine 90% of the time you'll still need a small base circle cam to to avoid contact with a stock cam position.
