All small block chevy's have the firing order of 18436572, there is no other order. Clockwise around the distributor cap.

Do you have a Chevy 350?? Or some other 350(Buick, Olds, or Pontiac).

Talk us through your distributor installation procedure, your timing procedure, and your valve adjusting procedure. Sounds like it is out of time or valves are too tight.

also, what is the casting # of the rear of the block??

the valves i adjusted while the engine was off. brand new hyd lifters. assembly lube everywhere. i tightened the rocker arm nuts down till i could not turn the rod. the lifter seat for the rod was about 1mm from the retainer clip inside lifter. the distributor was installed with the casting mark facing towards front of engine. the rotor was pointing just to the drivers side of the top radiator hose. the engine turns over very nicely but its just backfiring and spittin gas. quadrajet 4 bbl with a electronic fuel pump. hei distibutor ( coil in cap). and the number 1 spot on the distributor is just to the left of the wiring connections right?

No offense taken- but it is YOU who is mistaken.

You prolly have the valves adjusted too tight and/or the distributor 180 degrees out.

What is the casting number and date code from the rear of the engine, top side where the trans meets the block.

Could be two things, valves too tight or timing is off. The fact that you say you could not turn the pushrods leads me to believe you may have them too tight.

How did you ensure that the engine was at TDC firing #1 so you could install the distributor?? I'm also thinking 180 out or just off enough to cause problems, one or the other.

#1 can be anywhere on the cap, as long as the rotor points to that post when #1 piston is at TDC firing.

i stuck my finger in the #1 spark plug hole and turned the engine over until i got compression till it stopped. the wiring connection for the cap is pointing at the drivers side fender right next to the firewall well even with the firewall.
