small block chevy

I just bought a older Chevy pickup with a smallblock engine I cant determine what it is. I know its not a 350 or 305 by the look of the engine and the harmonic balancer. I tried to run the number but cant find a match. Any ideas?

Get the casting number off the left side of the engine behind the cylinder head next to the bell housing bolts. Will have 7 numbers about 1/2" high and will look something like 3970010 but not particularly those numbers.

I suspect the next thing we'll hear is that he can't get to the number to see it. If that's the case, use a telescoping mechanic's mirror and a good strong light. If the block is still factory block deck height, it probably has a stamped number on the passenger side of the block, just in front of the cylinder head. That stamped number will be more specific about where the motor came from and what it is.
