What you have heard is exactly right. The Vortec head is the best head ever installed by the factory on a production Generation 1 SBC. Nothing from the 70's or 80's even comes close, and the Vortecs are even better than the "infamous" Fuelie(or "camel hump") heads from the 60's.

The 492's are Double Humps, so 30-40HP increase.
The stock Vortec's need Mods for Cams with over .450" lift.
This has everything about Vortecs>> http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56505

This is a good comparison & a lot less to look thru>> http://www.onedirt.com/forum/guide-v...eads-2016.html
