small block ford ??? again

Last night i was loading a 1965 289 onto my test stand to fire up. I found out that the bolt pattern between the motor and trans is not the same as a 1967 289.

What year did ford make these changes??????

The 65 motor used a 1/4' dowel to locate the trans and the 67 motor had like a 1/2'" (i did not actually mic it yet)

thanks keith

The 5 bolt early blocks had 3/8 bolt holes and two 3/8 dowels. The 6 bolt blocks had 7/16 holes and two 1/2 dowels.

I'm pretty sure it was about May of '64. I'd have to check to be positive (references are at home, I'm at work). The C4 blocks would be 5 bolt and C5 should be 6 bolt. There may be some variations.

If the question isn't verified today, I'll post again tonite if this info is incorrect.

Arrow

The change was actually made in the mid-'65 production run. The casting cues apply though.

Wouldn't the "mid-'65 production run" be about May of '64?

I'll double check Bob Mannel's excellent book on the small block Ford, but I'm pretty sure it was May of '64 that the first 6-bolt blocks appeared.

Yep!! Looks like I was 3 months off. The change-over was in August.
