what's the best degree to time your engine?

That's a pretty general question that can't be answered without TONS of info about what you're running. Even after knowing what you are running it's hard. It also depends if you're trying to pass emissions or not. I have a mild 350 in my 76 K-10 and I run it about 10 BTC but retard it to about 6 before an emission test along with trashing all power out if it with the carb. I've tried setting it with a vacuum guage but the best way I've found is to go by trial and error. Set it on or near factory specs and try going each way about 2 deg. each way. See which works better (power, starting, shutting down, idle, smell). Play around from there and just see what works.

Start with 34 degrees total timing, hook everything back up go for a test drive, advance some more go for a drive. Keep doing this till it pings then back it off 2 degrees.
