Small V6 to Big V6

So this site has been proving itself admirably to me, and I was simply wondering if 262 cylinder heads will match up to the 229 block. I have the 229 in my 81 ElCo and can't seem to find anything helpful really, and I'd just like to get some more backbone into it. I've read from many places that the 350 heads will bolt perfectly onto the 305, but I'm unsure as the whether the story reighns true for the V6s. Any help and input is welcomed. Thanks

i see this all the time with V6 mustangs. they buy them new because they're cheap and spend a lot of money to make them faster. but never as fast as a GT.
while that is not your case: your elco is setup for a V8, you'd be better of backbone wise and dollar wise to put a 350 in it.

Well, I was intending to do that, but I actually enjoy having a V6 under the hood of that monster. I don't want to go and replace the transmission underneath as well, 3-spd (Z6). If I wanted to do a motor swap I'd swap for the 305 personally just because between it and the 350 there really isn't much of a difference. I just wanna know what 262 parts are interchangable with that block, if there are any.

That depends on who's V6 Mustang you're referring too, there are even some insanely fast 4 bangers out there.

Hi,

Heads & intake will bolt onto any 200, 229 or 262 Chevy 90* V-6

Like Richard said, the heads swap out physically, just fine. There are intake manifold compatibility issues to watch out for. IMHO, forget the idea, though. That will drop the (already low) compression ratio even lower.

The 229 heads w/the correct chambers can be had w/OEM-installed 1.84" intakes. I have a set on my 80 Malibu engine. Because the 229 is 3/4 of a 305, the bores are too small to take advantage of the 1.94" intakes of a 4.3L V6, anyway.

But what you really want, is to swap out the 229 and install a 4.3L V6 in its place- IF you want to stay w/a V6. But when most guys get to that stage, they realize that for just a bit more, they coulda' had a V8.

There's a cast iron Q-jet intake made for the Chevy V6, as well as aftermarket intakes. If a 4.3L V6 engine is swapped for the 229, you need a different distributor than the 229's.
