smells like gas

hey, quick question.

everyonce in awhile, i smell a gasoline smell when just cruising around. Not a lot, just more than I want to be smelling. Could it be a bad wire not firing - i.e. grounding onto the manifold or something? Its my pet theory and I'd like to either go with it or dispose of it....

thanks!

I'd need lots more info on your car to make an assumsion
your charcoal canister could be pluged or the fuel return line could be leaking or gas fumes escaping from from your girlfriend:p
U get the point!!!

i don't think i'm leaking fuel. I don't see anything leaking when the hood is open. I think the carb is set okay, the float levels are set and everything, too.

got some smoke coming out the back, though... but thats another story (right....?...)

Well, are all your gaskets in good shape on your carb?

i rebuilt the carb about 2 months ago - with a holley trick-kit, so all the gaskets are new. The only one I didn't replace was the base gasket, which looked good - plus it was a bit beefier than the one that the kit came with.

okay. now i guess i've started this, i should just spew.

what else... i checked the plugs a little while ago. For the most part they looked a little rich and a few were pretty gunked up. My compression on seven cylinders was in the 150 range, but in the #7 cylinder it was lower, about 135 or so. I haven't been able to get an oil squirty thing to pokie in there to really check the rings/valves stuff though....

(whups.... ma dog nearly kicked my modem off...)

I've been meaning to mess with jetting but i've never done that and so its SCARY.

The other day I was taking off plug wires while idling, thinking mabye that I would learn something, listening to engine sound and such. nothing suprising till i got to wire #3 (or was it 5?), when i got a good little shock just holding the little boot that covers the spark plug connector. it wasn't wet or anything, but i got a little kicker anyway... and this just reinforced my theory that its the wires....

but i thought i'd check here 'cause I've already bought too much crap 'cause of my own pet theorys.

any of this help?

should I replace that darn carb gasket? (i feel dumb now for not replacing it - even though the old one looked good )

I would replace the wires if you got whapped, obviously a short and you were the ground.

Before you throw any money at it, look behind your seat. The fuel tank filler neck could be leaking at the grommet on the tank. Also check the sender unit gasket and tank seams. You might not see it, but it takes very little gas to smell it inside the cab.

Yep. that was it. Went for a fillup and after a few seconds there was this trickling at my feet.....I think its the filler neck.

Now to find that leak you will need someone (nice lady) that will blow on your filler tube while you feel around for an air leak.
