i have just bought a 1988 camaro, it has or looks like a 400 harmonic ballance on it, it has a lip on the rear of it, anyways i dont know if its been stroked or not, my main problem is every 100 miles it uses oil 1 quart, i have done a compression test, all cylenders have around 150 .. im thinking burned valves, can anyone help find out how to tell if its the rings, or heads.. im new on here, so i got to learn alot, thanks everone

is there smoke out the exhaust? what color?

valve stem seals can cause the oil to get into the combustion chamber is moderate amounts and start to burn the oil up.

x2 on that...if a stem seal is dry or damaged it would course smoking out the pipe..if your compression is good and your plugs have no oil signs i would go with the stem seal

Good compression and oil consumption are mutually exclusive things.

What this can tell you is:

- The compression ring is good.

- The second ring or the oil control rings may not be good.

- None of the rings are seated into the cylinder wall. This tends to be a bigger problem with chrome rings.

- The valve stem seals are shot.

- The valve stem to guide clearance is too wide.

- The crankcase is not venting adequately.

- Wiped cam lobes, check the spark plugs for fouling. This is something that a compression nor a leakdown test may catch as at cranking speeds even a little remaining lift may be sufficient to fill the cylinder, but at speed there is a miss with a lot a vacuum in the cylinder that pulls oil around the rings. Removing the rocker covers and measuring valve movement is the only sure way to tell.

- There is a high volume oil pump installed with wide bearing clearances and or no oil management parts like a windage tray or scraper.

Investigation should start with a leakdown test this will give guidance as to the sealing ability of the rings and valves without having to take anything apart.

wow, thanks for all the comments, the plugs are not white, i would say oily .also at different speeds, it tries to miss at times,the smoke and tail pipes are solid black, like smutt..but, ill try at the starting point, by taking the rochers off and check all the lifters mesurements,and other info will be greatfull. if i have to ill rebuild it, but i would need some advice on like what kind of rings are the best, and berings, and pistons, i know how to build one, but its seems like every time i get parts, they want too sell me cheap parts.. i thank all of you for help

I FOUND 1 PLUG , THAT HAD GUNK ON IT, MORE LIKE CARON, ALL OVER IT,IT HAS JUST A LITLE BLOW BY, WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THAT CARBON TO GET ON 1 PLUG? JUST CURIOUS, IF I WASENT GOING ON VACATION, ILL SNATCH THM HEADS OFF QUICK, AND PUT WATER IN THE VALVES TO SEE IF THE LEAK.IM SURE THEY WILL, IF ANYONE CAN COMMENT PLEASE DO, I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR THE SUPPORT
