Smoking basics

I have a '73 Chev 350 engine that only smokes a little upon starting. Accelerating and letting it off produces no visible smoke. The truck sits a lot and is used for short trips mostly. I replaced the plugs with hotter ones. The old plugs were black and somewhat damp. The owner always pumped the carb many times when starting. I found that it started quite well with one or two presses of the pedal. Timing calls for 12 deg btd and it is on the mark. (Automatic tranny). Engine looks to be a replacement so no accurate milage is known.

Any opinions???

That is what the cause is on the old fords.

Every one I have owned (once they got really high mileage) smokes on startup after sitting for long periods. I just ignored it and kept driving them. Never seemed to get any worse.
