So called "Auto parts stores"...

These days of big chains taking over has really taken it's toll on service.

I went to the closest "store", an Autozone...

I wanted some 1/2" fine LEFT HAND thread lug nuts so I could roll my car around. I bought the donor 55 Olds rear and it came without the nuts.

So, I asked for the nuts by size. As usual, I get "year, make & model?" I said 55 Olds. No, we don't go back that far....but, we have a display out on the floor with studs sticking out, and take your old nut and try it on those studs...then we will have the part number.

So, even though I had NO old nuts, I looked at the display. There was not one left hand stud anywhere on it. I then tell them that there is no left studs there. He says "If you bring your old nuts, we will try to fit them on the display studs".

Now,........ I just need to know if your stores are as bad as this???

My first-stop, first-choice store? Nope. And the guys know me (and the vehicles I have) well enough that when I walk in and ask for an oil filter, they ask for my car, my truck, or someone else's car. If it's for one of mine, they even know the number of the filter without me saying anything more. Locally owned and operated stores like that are hard to find these days......

In a while, Chet.

what's really bad is that, Autozone's computer system goes back to the 30's on some make/ models.. I'm sure they had the listing for a '55 Olds, just to lazy ( or dumb ) to look..

I pay extra for service... We have a small hole in the wall carquest down the street.. Reds Auto Supply, and has been there for 60 years. I walk in, and I can tell them which car I'm working on of mine, don't even tell the details or anything ( Just, Ford, Chevy or Rambler ), but they know what it is.... I get the best service there.. some of carquests books are screwed up when it comes to AMC, but we manage to get somthing that will work... like strut rod bushings, they are discontinued for my '65 American ( available elsewhere ), my soloution was to order them for a '73 Gremlin, only diffrence is the American uses a 1 peice bushing and the Gremlin uses a 2 peice.. but the 2 peice is easier to install anyway.

they also stock the DRX 60 condensor for my '51 Chevy for me ( I only ordered it once, they stocked it after that )... And I'm frequently treated to discounts..

But, it is fun to go to Advance Auto and ask for parts for my Rambler.. kids behind the counter don't know how to look it up 1/2 the time

I only go to the Advance auto.A couple of weeks ago I needed a throw out bearing for an old t-10 4 speed.I walk and say, I need a throw bearing for a...........oh that,s a number XXXXXX.He brings it up to the counter.
They are a bunch of rock crawler four wheel drive guys. They know there Chevies.
I have found that like most things. It,s not the store........it,s the people that make a difference.

On some cars the number of doors does make a difference.

That's sad..I think somebody needs to learn more about cars before working at a place that helps people fix their cars.

and to answer if our local parts store is that bad...which one you want my bad experiences from? I don't think there is a single parts store in my area that can give you the right part the first time...or the 4th time for that matter.

We have 6 choices here.

There is Auto Zone ~ Advance ~Pep Boys

Then There is NAPA If I get just about anyone other than Darrell then things go OK.

Then there is the Mighty Car Quest & "Performance {which CQ bought.

@ CQ they all know me by name they know my Trucks & know I always want the High grade parts.

A Few of the managers & I share personal phone #s .

They always treat me with Respect & take the time to BS if they are slow.

They have a Hugh warehouse in Ocala & can have just about everything in stock.

Maybe because of my cookie cutter Chebby's ,
BUT LDIMEDILLIGAF?

The Real Parts stores are going away with the drive in theater.

And I will add we all need more knowledgable parts guys like 66 GMC.

I know why Autozone, Shuck's, and such stores, don't have what you are asking for.

It is because they only stock the "A" classified parts. Anything that is a not a "top" selling part will have to be ordered. They also do not pay enough to employ "top notch" parts people. (I found them at the local Parts plus, and a couple of other stores).

I feel this pain, and buy my parts from the person's with, at whatever company they work for, and the most knowledge in what I am looking for.

Getting to know the person you are talking too also helps.

Guess I have been in this business too long.

The funny part of this story to me is when I went to my local advance auto parts for 7/16-20 wheel studs I bought the 3 the "helpful" person gave me not taking the time to check,

When I got home and after they were installed only then did i find out all three were left hand thread.... not really going to work with my right hand new lug nuts on my 66 ...

oh well NAPA had the right ones .

I walked into a Schucks and asked for a squarebore carburetor gasket because they didn't have any out on the floor. The guy asked me what the year make and model was and I told him it wasn't going to help because the car never came with a square bore carburetor. He insisted so I told him and he came back with the spread bore gasket I didn't ask for...

So I miss spelled Schucks, 'I got the wrong part'. Just like Pep Boys 'Manny Moe and Jack's are off today'.
