The so called "rat rod" movement...

Now I really like traditional hot rods, and so called "rat rods", but I think this movement has gone too far.

Why you ask? Because now you can buy a "turnkey rat rod" for 19 grand if you supply motor and transmission

http://www.hotrodsurf.com/Hot_Rods/hot_rod_home.htm

and second because everybody and their grandma wants to have a rat rod now....see attached picture

I love traditional style rods, and I wouldnt put big billets on my ride, but rather painted steelies with baby moons, but this whole thing has gone too far. "rat rods" arent supposed to cost 19 grand, I could buy a nice shiny t-bucket with a blown SBC for that money. Plus now they call themselves a "culture"....????????

And whats up will all the maltese crosses everywhere???? If it aint old school enough add some rattle can flat black and red maltese crosses everywhere

Anyways, sorry for the rant.

Lets call it "Jesse James Syndrome"
Put something on the boob tube enough, everybody says how cool it is,and the people who can't turn a wrench try to buy their way to being in on the fad.
This too shall pass.
Have a good un,George

Hey the power rangers are still around! just not as good as they were when they first came out about 12 years ago. Hell my parents still can't get that annoying theme song out of their heads from when I was a kid.

Stupid rice, why do they do that to there cars? I mean, Ive seen several ricers around here in primer, funny thing is there is not a single thing done tothe looks their car, no body kit, no goofy wing. I think they look even dumber than the ones who do put a body kit on it. Not that theres anything wrong with driving around in primer, beause Ive had my truck in primer for a while now.

Ok Ill shut up now

Brad

I don't mind Rat Rods that much as long as they're built safe, which at least 75% aren't.

I do agree though that it's a fad, however IMHO there's a big difference between a budget built hot rod and a rat rod. One is built the best it can be based on a limited budget, and the other is built to represent something that for a number of reasons (mostly safety related) passed into oblivion eons ago.

Some people just don't understand that there are very good reasons rodders stopped building those cars. The culture thing is just another way for today's youth to "rebel" against the "norm". Happens in every generation.

You laugh now...but you never know what my roll out of the garage in the future. A little chop, shave, and some better steelies.... You'd be chillin' like Bob Dylan!

That price is just crazy!!

We used to build a rat's for around $500 and then that was all used parts and and old flat black body on the stock frame using stock suspension with a master-cylinder upgrade to duel reservoir for safety...now-a-days that car would cost ..what did you say19k...that is just crazy but I guess thats what the market will handle so they will sell....$19,000-rat rods...who would-a thunk???

just the thought of taking a somewhat new car with a somewhat new paintjob, and then painting it a flat matte color....and throwing steelies on it... just makes me raff. of course, those are probably stock wheels, just painted red....

I happen to agree with Centerline on this..Since I am getting old enough to be an original "Rat Rodder" I can say that when we built those cars 40 years ago..(has it been that long?) we focused on performance..least all the guys I ran with did..

Now saying that it was quite likely that working at the local gas station did not leave alot of room in the budget..Sooo we primered them..got some cheapy seat covers.painted the wheels..which were quite likely buick rims on ford or chev centers and passed on the chrome and paint one the way to get that new tach..or some brake shoes or what ever else we really needed...Maybe we might spring for a set of baby moons or soemthing..

What I remember is nothing like what people are doing today..

The cars were purpose built..that is to win at the local strip..

Then the money guys got in and all of a sudden our primered out cars were not "good enough" Now one had to have the paint and the chrome and the billet..

I still cannot understand the guy who will not do the best he can with what he has..And why that is not "OK"...

Just my Sunday morning rant..wheres my prozac?

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE rat rods, but it's become a fad. Everybody now wants to jump onto the bandwagon and have a "rat". A "rat" isnt supposed to cost 19k, if you got that kinda money build a nice "traditional rod" and it'll still be 50's era correct...ever looked a mag of the 50's or early 60's? No primered rides in there. The primered rides were for people who were the "scum" of the "hot rodder" crowd, they didnt have the money to build a show rod, they built a go-rod. Built for speed, not looks.
