So it starts...Gen III 5.3 Vortec into 51 Chevy

Alright just got me a new powerplant and tranny to replace my current 350/350 setup in my 51 Chevy Coupe.

Got me a nice 5.3/4l60e setup w/ only 10k miles to swap in :D
Now starts the madness, I will try to keep the thread updated with any new info and if anybody has done a similar swap or know someone, feel free to chime in with some advice as this will be my first motor swap with something this new :pimp:

There's a good article in the May 2008 Car Craft (for Pete's sake it's only early March!!) that deals with putting a LS engine into early Chevelles. You might glean some useful info from that.

Vortec 5.3?

WHY? WHY? and Why?, when there are plenty 454 BBC motors just waiting to get out of motorhome engine compartrments and looking for a new home. Real rods don't have air conditioning, efi or leather. It's easy to tell if you bought or built the right car, when you walk away from it and you have to take a look back at it, you know it's right!.

I thought about it, but 454's get horrible gas mileage and I can get much better gas mileage and power out of one of these new gen III motors than I ever could with an old big block :pimp:

Fuel System Setup

Alright I know for this motor I will need a high pressure pump, I found out that the 5.3 needs 55-62 PSI to run and that a S-10 Blazer with the 4.3 needs 60-66 PSI.

With that said I am assuming I should be able to use the S-10 tank for my swap, but don't know for sure since I am still kind of learning about all this fuel Injection stuff

If anybody is good with FI, feel free to chime in w/ some opinions

Sounds like that pump should work fine.

I installed TPI into my truck. I used the sending unit from an 87 pickup and I used the pump from a 92 Camaro.Use anything that works.

Here come the UPS truck...

Alright well just ordered me some parts, got me a new monte carlo tank, sending unit, and an edelbrock high pressure in tank pump. :D

Motor mount adapters got here yesterday and sent off the computer and wiring harness to be reworked and reprogrammed to take off any excess emmissions or anything else I will not be needing.

Motor is in....!!!

Alright the motor is in, though they sent me the wrong sending unit for the fuel tank, but other than that the engine and tranny is installed, I will have to make a K-member for the trans since it is longer than the Th-350, but I should be able to fab something up. Well other than that, :) waiting for my sending unit here is some pics of the install.

Update

Well, ran into a few snags, the harness for the motor was missing too much to be modified so now I have to find one. :smash:

My question for this is do I have to find a drive by cable harness or can one off of a DBW motor be modified to fit my application?

Also going to put my tank together, just got my sending unit since they sent me the wrong one the first time

Updates

Alright well got the new tank in and plumbed the fuel system finally

Also got the cooling system hooked up and am working on the tranny cooling lines currently, I got a external trans cooler to help keep the trans a little bit cooler since it is a bigger trans than the th350.

I yanked the PS pump, since the car does not have it and went to the parts store for a smaller belt and rerouted it, seems like it'll work, its pretty solid in there and everything is spinning the right way.

I also fabricated up a K-member for the new trans so now the motor and trans are in there nice and solid.

Dropped the driveshaft off at the shop to get shortened about 1/2 an inch so that should be ready to throw on today or tomorrow

Got my ECM all tuned, now I just need a wiring harness to hook everything up, still gotta find one.

Only a few things left before firing this beast up:

-gotta hook up shift linkage to trans
-wiring harness
-throttle cable (probably get one from Lokar)
-install driveshaft
-and whatever else pops up when those are done

I was wondering if anyone knows the weight of a cast iron block gen 3 motor?

I have a complete 5.3 on a engine stand with the GM performance parts intake and it seems alot heavier than an early small block with cast heads.

72 chevelle

Well.... I just wanted to tell you me and my Dad just finished putting a 5.3 vortec into my 72 chevelle...

How do you like it? :mwink: Did you do anything to it or is it all stock?

Chevelle72 04-27-2008 12:22 AM

hey

I like it a lot! it has plenty of power even though its pretty much all stock... im plannin on gettin a ls6 intake manifold for it to give it a little more pep... and possibly a kenne bell centrifugal supercharger to give even more. but yeah id say you picked a good engine to put in your car... ill be sure to post some pics of mine later....

mudbog42 04-27-2008 10:55 AM

Sweet

Well I can't wait to get this one started, hopefully this coming weekend. :D

-gotta hook up shift linkage to trans------Check
-wiring harness-----Just ordered a painless one, should get here this week
-throttle cable (probably get one from Lokar)------Check
-install driveshaft------Check
-and whatever else pops up when those are done------o2 sensors, need to put 2 of them somewhere, one on each side of the exhaust.
