I asked what was wrong 'cause if it was just chirping, a little oil would fix that. If it is jumping like you describe that tells me it is defective and needs to be replaced. You should be able to remove just the core from the tranny end of the sheath. Lay it on a flat surface and roll it. If it doesn't roll smoothly, get a whole new cable. Only cost about $30 for a custom one at a speedo repair shop as opposed to $10,000 at an OEM dealer. Not worth wrestling with an old one that doesn't behave. I don't like white lithium grease 'cause I have found it hardened in some junk yard things I have taken apart.
