solenoid sticking

78 ford p/u with v-8 motor. The truck starts fine but sometimes the solenoid sticks and you have to tap on it to get it to stop. Have replaced solenoid and battery (both new) and it still doing the same thing. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance for your help, Jum

Arrow

Have you measured the distance between solenoid gear and flywheel? (paperclip thickness) I would take it off and have it bench tested to make sure it snaps right back when the current is released. I have had brand new solenoids that have failed. You can try shimming, and make sure the bolts are the proper starter ones, and are tight.

Chances are its not your solenoid, but your starter drive that is sticking. Take the starter off and clean up the sliding parts of the drive.
