SOLENOID vs STARTER

Hi....When I try to start my 46 Ford engine, most of the time the starter starts to crank and then turns and spins in a whinning sound. Does this mean the starter is bad or does it have something to do with the Solenoid ?

If it the starter, is it difficult to rebuild or am I better off to buy a rebuilt one ?

Thanks in advance J C

the problem is the starter drive. the drive can be replaced, but if the starter is old and has not been freshened up lately. it would be a good idea to get a rebuilt, or have it rebuilt. good luck.

Starter Drive ?

Hi Milner..thanks for responding to my question...I'm pretty much new at this so forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question.

When you say " starter drive" do you mean the bendix ? or something else internal in the starter ?

Thanks.............J C

You need a new Bendix, if your starter is old as previously mentioned you would be better off just replaceing the whole starter.

Starter Drive

Doc here,

This is the starter drive unit:

The piece marked "Starter Drive " on the snout of the starter...

As Henry said you might consider a new one, or rebuilding this one with new brush/springs , bearings/bushings, burnish the armature, and solenoid..As a unit it will be new..
