I've never understood the alure of "looking" fast but not "going" fast. WTH?

I would rather have a blower under the hood and sneak up on someone. . .

It`s amazing the number of guys that install a tunnel ram just to have the "look"
A couple of fellows I know of, had a drag race, a 65 chevy pickup, built 350, camel hump heads, big cam, headers, tunnel ram with 2 holley`s on top, 3000 stall converter, 4.56 gears and a posi. Other fellow who used to be my close friend had a 84 cutlass, chevy 350 he had gone through and built mostly using the stock stuff that came in it. He used 305 heads, and the only performance parts he used was a double roller timing chain, a summit cam same as edelbrock performer specs, a weiand stealth intake, a 650 demon carb, a hei with MSD 6AL box, afterburner headers, th350 with stock converter, 3.73 gears and a posi, they raced 3 times in a 8th mile, the cutlass took him by a car lenth all 3 times, the guy in the truck was ticked off, but he didn`t understand, the cutlass had what he didn`t, torque. The tunnel ram killed the low end. Had he used a single quad intake and carb, the truck would have blew his doors off. My used to be friend even said "the tunnel ram looks intimidating, but it was just a race for fun, there was no money or rep involved and I don`t mind losing and I knew I couldn`t beat him, but when I did I didn`t know he would take it personal"
It reminded me of what was said in a old hot rod magazine I used to have
"Over carbing next to over camming is the single biggest mistake hot rodders make"

Not only that, but the "look" was kinda pricey the last time I checked. There are a lot of guys misrepresenting the power of their cars. I guess they add up all the advertised gains for the things they bought and then add that to the stock HP. But, as the smart builder knows, it's the right combo of parts that gets the job done. There are a lot of guys who would crap their pants if they put their car on a dyno and saw how much power they WEREN'T getting.

Why play stupid? To attract stupid guys?

I was hanging out at the local Chevy dealer one day with my buddy (he did oil changes) when one of the mechanics comes over and asks for a "bolt stretcher". My buddy wasn't stupid enough to fall for it, but he said "go ask Jody over there. He'll look for one all day." He did, and they had that poor kid go to every parts store in town looking for one and even went up on the roof to ask the guys re-tarring the place if they had one. Finally somebody just handed him something so he could take it to the mechanic. Then the mechanic yelled "This is a 1/2 inch! I told you I needed a 3/8ths bolt stretcher!"

Motor City!!!

I'm a third generation Chrysler powertrain designer from the MOTOR CITY!!!!
It's a MOTOR, 'cause I say it's a MOTOR!!!!
We have a building wing next to some big-assed dyno's at the Chrysler Tech Center, that has a big sign that says MOTOR ROOM. I have never seen anything electric in there.
I've heard people call em engines, but it was just some German from Stuttgaurd and we just tossed them out on their ear.....
By the way, we're excited to be an AMERICAN CAR COMPANY again.

Well I thought my story days were over but here goes.
Once in a while I bring my T-Bucket to work. It usually gets a lot of attention from co-workers and others in the building I work in. This one particular new employee showed a lot of interest. I started talking to him and he asked me what it had for an engine, told him 350, "is it stroked" he asked, I said no its just a 350. Well he USED TO HAVE a Camaro with a 350 but it was stroked, 850HP at the wheels. No Blower, no Nitrous. So I gave him the "WOW' and was going to walk away, but he had to tell me the secret to getting 850HP from a NA engine, they installed a Ford crank in it. His buddy has the patent. Its what all the NASCAR boys run. You learn something new every day

I've been reading along this post and laughing very hard. I have several that have come to mind that i've remembered over the years. I live in a rural area in southern Illinois. So lets put it this way there were several "country boys" I grew up with. You know the type they were raised on a farm and they thought they had a little more mechanical ability than the rest of us who lived in town. I remember a conversation in the lunch room in high school there was one kid who had his dad's stock chevy 4x4 truck they had put a 3/4 race cam in and headed out to test it,, they had to shut her down at 140MPH cause the front end was lifting, but since they had 4wheel drive they were able to make it home. Just think how lucky those boys were that they didn't install the "full race cam" in that stock motor cause the 4 wheel drive might not have been able to save them. Another quick one that comes to mind. There was a certain gentleman who used to stand on the street corner downtown which we cruised on a regular basis. He did have an early first gen nova(four door don't remember what year 62-64). He would often engage us kids in some bench racing sessions. It seems that he was in the air force and he had made it back from the war with an experimental titanium motor. He later installed in his Nova. He could leave the stop sign and before he reached the tracks he would be going around 180(maybe an 1/8 mile). Although we never seen her run because he was waiting for a part for it that the Air Force had to send him and the local authorities wouldn't give them clearance to send it to him. If it hadn't have been for that conspiracy theory we would have gotten to see the worlds fastest Nova.
