I think the big reason is that most people are used to thinking that if you throw a cam, intake and 4 barrell on a sbc, it automaticly is getting 350-400 horses. I've always talked my car up, but on the lesser side of what I think its running. My 350 is probably around 275-300 horses and I wouldnt claim otherwise. HG

283 Hp at the rear wheels IS 400 HP at the flywheel! What do you race dyno's or cars? Dyno numbers are notoriously different from dyno to dyno and can't be trusted to do comparison testing. People will always overstate their cars capabilities and keeping a dyno sheet in your car to prove your engines might is useless anyway, anyone can make an engine give false flash readings on a dyno that are easily 100 HP higher than they really are, especially if you own the dyno.

Just my oppinion but who cares about dyno specs. To me all it is is paying $$ to have a big number to show people. If your tuning and modifying on a dyno to get the most out of your engine OK.But not just for a figure thats like flashing your cam card around.

It appears to be the same with the HP numbers and drag racing as was with my jet boat from several years ago. I KNEW for a fact my boat would run slightly over 80mph, I had it clocked at a sanctioned drag boat event. During the course of owning my boat, my 80mph boat outran several 100mph boats, or at least that's how fast their owners said thier boats would run. Without spending more money or doing anything different, I gained the reputation of having one of those 100mph boats just because my boat could out run theirs....an mine still only ran 80mph.......ah, the power of words....sometimes it's even better than horsepower......

HOT ROD mag says that all the time too... air/fuel tuning on a dyno is the only way to tune an engine for consistancy. i can go to any dynojet facility and dyno within 3% of what i run at the office. if a stock 00 mustang Cobra makes 240 at the ground does that mean it really makes nearly 400hp at the crank when its rated from the factory at 320? I have discused that with more people... talking up your car is GREAT everyone should be proud of their vehicle just wish those that make outlandish claims would be willing to stand up recognize when they are wrong.. a 400hp camaro should run better than mid-high 9s in the 8th... making false reading doens't benefit anyone, if your called on it and can't run the times to match the numbers just makes the untrue party look like an *** . him claiming 400hp and running only a half second faster then a Focus is assanine (sp). |
