MY chevy 350 has been making some odd noises lately. I flooded the carb, it backfired and cracked the starter case. I had to drop the exaust to get to the starter, and it started sounding like it was leaking so I replaced the header flacge gaskets a couple of times. Noise is still there, but when I move away from the engine and down to the exaust I can't hear it anymore. Engine runs as well as ever, noise is louder in gear, amd it sounds like an exaust leak when driving but remains evasive when I park it and look for the noise. What should I do? Check the exaust again? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks alot.

wait till tomorro when its cold start, it and feel around the flange gasket for leaks, do it quick though it heats up quick. try a 3 ft piece of heater hose and listen with it, you find the leek youl know it, you can probe all around the system ,youll find it

Thanks alot fire power, so you're saying that I'm still missing the leak. I'm glad you think so, if i the sound isn't coming from inside the engine, I'll fix it with a smile. I'll definitely check in the morning.

Since it appears to have happened after you pulled the header, I would think that it is in the area removed. How old are the headers? Could they be deteriorated enough to have a leak at the seam that became opened after removal? When I have an exhaust leak I'm trying to trace, I restrict the exhaust outlet/tailpipe, the extra back pressure always reveals the leak.
