Source for bandsaw blades?
 

I need to obtain a replacement metal-cutting blade for a 14" Wilton vertical bandsaw. The size I need is 3/8" x 92-1/2". The usual places like Harbor Freight, Northern, Sears? Or are there better (mail-order) souces?

one of my saws has an odd size blade so I make my own, I grind a bevel about 6 times longer than the blade thickness, then clamp them in a jig and silver solder them together, then off to the belt sander to sand the weld area and check thickness with a micrometer so it doesn't have a lump weld.

There are sites that are do order to weld band saw blades.

A while back, with a small shop, I had a lot of trouble getting right-size blades, and then often times the welds would snap. Got so aggravated I bought a blade welder for $900 and started just buying in coils...pricey but then you always have some. Guys would walk in and buy blades from me sometimes, I think I charged ten bucks plus blade material.

Any old metal shop that has an upright "Do-All" band saw will likely have a blade welder as part of the saw.

But, you can weld your own with gas or tig. The trick is to hold the ends aligned well, and anneal it afterward, just barely have about a half-inch section of it glowing a little, not red hot, then bring the heat down slowly. When it cools, bend it a couple times to test then grind off the extra weld. It's actually as reliable as the blade welder, just takes longer. Maybe you want to grind the teeth back a little in that area so that part is not having to cut.

Obviously the way for a guy just wanting one blade is a good supplier of pre-welded blades, I'm just throwing in some comments.

Who every you buy from , buy a quality blade. I had continuous trouble with a horizontal band saw until I spent a fair amount of money on a quality blade. All the difference in the world.

See if there's a local Do-All representative in your area. I was very fortunate to have one as a friend, and I ordered my bandsaw blades from him, for my Buffalo horizontal bandsaw (46 1/2" blades). They were excellent quality. This was quite a few years ago, but I'm sure there are still reps out there that would be glad to help you out.

You can find one from ebay or silmilar sites.

I've had good luck with Lenox bandsaw blades. I get them at my local Fastenal.
