Most likely no. They put those there so that they can get the average speed of drivers in most cases. With it showing you your speed they also hope you will slow down if you are going to fast. In some states I have heard them putting cameras on them though, but it is not very likely.

If you can't afford to pay a ticket, then you can't afford to exceed the speed limit. Drive the speed limit and save enough gasoline money so you can afford to pay the ticket???!!!!

My blazer has a v8 in it so the speedometer doesn't work right so its hard to tell what speed im going. After i swapped engines the speedometer says im going like a 100 when im going around 60 and the needle just jumps up and down.

No I go past those all day long, if the state had the ability to know whose vehicles were doing what speed I would have already had my license revoked.

They just mentioned today becasue Ontario is thinking of re-introducing photo-radar that only Alberta has photo-radar. So, if you're in Alberta, maybe you got pinched. Otherwise it's a trailer designed to show your speed so you can get an idea how fast you're actually going because your speedo is not a legal measurement of vehicle speed.

Must be as guesstamate of your actual speed?

The radar gun has the last say. The cop will pull you over and tell you exactly how fast you were going and give you a ticket just for the hell of it.

Your speedo could go off calibration. I'm sure you've seen speedo's bounce or be way off when you change tires or due to temperature changes, etc. Or like in Checy guy's case when you change the transmission and don't change to the correct speedo gear. Some speedo's might be dead on, but try to prove it in court. Maybe a calibration certificate, but even then, how many people can witness a speedo at the same time? I don't know, law is not my forte.

For the most part the police have the final say. They do, however have to prove that the radar system was calibrated, well, at least in most states and provinces. I don't know if every state/province requires it. There's a bunch of other legal issues that could be taken into account as well. For example, on some systems the radar/laser is connected to the VSS and therefore the VSS of the cruiser also has to be calibrated.

A friend of mine got off a speed charge a few years ago because the officer could not produce the notarized calibration certificate.

Yeah I know it sucks, it's difficult to beat a speeding charge, especially if you're guilty. Really sucks for the guys that get the charge mistakenly.

I'm in Edmonton, Alberta but still no tickets for me. Every time there's a Ford minivan parked at the side of the road my speed is checked. That's the vehicle of choice here for photo radar. Funny thing is these guys park up on the curb or in places where you never see vehicles park...it's kind of a dead giveaway that it's photoradar. However, people are still getting nabbed for speeding because they don't pay attention to what's parked conspicuously at the side of the road.
When they first started photo radar here they had an old beat up ford truck with racks on the back and pile of rubbish in the box. People were getting tickets issued at an astounding rate. Then someone cried foul and somehow they weren't allowed to use the old truck anymore.
