Speedo cable

Hey Gang, alls runnin well here. Well almost. Having trouble with getting my speedometer to work in my 62 Impala. I have the TH350 and even with a new cable it still doesn't work. I disconnected it from the tranny and used a drill to spin the cable and it works fine but when I reattach at the tranny making sure it's key'd in it doesn't work.
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong. When I first hooked it up it worked but the needle was bouncing and then it just stopped. I bought a new cable and still doesn't work.

have you pulled the speed-O housing out of the trans to inspect the plastic gears inside?
