Speedomotive Crooks

I have been a member of this forum for quite some time and it pains me to hear stories of people being ripped off.
You read every line hoping for good news and it gets worst. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be writing a ripoff post.

Well here is my experience.
I spent hard earned money for a fully blue printed race engine from a company called Speedomotive in West Covina California and when it was time to take delivery in June the phone number is disconnected and I can't get in contact with them. Their website is still up and they have an active Ebay business.

This is a first for me any advise folks?

Call the west Covina police. Let them get a face and a phone number on the situation, meaning let them investigate and get some info of who is in charge and a contact number.
You may not be the first one who has called them.

I Google the address, this is what I found: 131 N. Lang Avenue, West Covina, CA, 91790 - Warehouse Property on LoopNet.com

Looks like it may be for sale. I will be in S. Ca. next week, want me to go by there and see if they still exist? I will be in the El Monte neck of the woods, auditing a grocery store. Looks like it's about 10 miles from where I will be.

There have been probs. w/this outfit since WAY before there was an internet. They used to be the kink of cheap stroker "kits". IIRC some used production 6" Olds rods, rewelded cranks w/straightness probs., and always delivery date issues. Thankfully I'm on the right coast so I was never tempted to use them for anything. But many of those who did, had probs. of one kind or another.

contact the BBB or The BAR of Ca. I'm not sure what the police would do but am thinking they'd tell you to contact someone else.

Yeah if you are in that neck of the woods let me know if they're still open.

Speed-o-motive has been around since God was a pup. they where once (~40 yr ago) a very solid business with good products, but, unfortunately, the owner got old and cranky (it happens) and business often isn't taken care of properly these days. I purchased a 377 sbc long block from them 6-8 years ago, and was very happy with it, but many others since then have had poor experiences. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner is either ill or worse, accounting for the closure. It's sad from many angles, but hey… it happens.

Hope the op gets the problem resolved somehow,

Russ

Speed-O-Motive used to be a decent place to buy kits.
I bought a stroker kit from them years ago and everything was great. I even called them and talked to someone, and they were friendly and knowledgeable.
Sadly, like so many businesses, they seemed to have gone down the toilet.
I don't know if they have new owners, or what, but they are not the same as they used to be years ago.
Same thing with alot of machine shops. They get sold to new owners, and the new owners are just a bunch of hacks.

Any business is only as good as the people running it.

I went by there today, spoke to a gal that had a shop in the front. She said Speedomotive had left months ago and suggested contacting a California Contractors site to see if there was any contact info. Apparently i was not the first to be looking for them. Good luck, Dan
