spray cans or hvlp?

Hi
My son just impressed the heck out of me he replaced the bumper on his 1999 nissan altima, by himself. We both have very limited experience with cars. He wants to buy an hvlp paint set up to hook up to my compressor to paint it. I told him he could buy 2 spray cans of paint plus clear coat to do the job. Do you think the hvlp would do a better job?

Of course the spray gun with the proper air supply (simply a "compressor" isn't enough info) is going to be MUCH better. But it depends on what your expectations are, what money you have to spend and where you are going to do this.

But realistically something as large as a bumper using a spray gun is the only way to go.

Thanks Brian

Thx Brian
Compressor has 8 gallon tank @150 psi max, with drying tower. I think it would be ok for the bumper. The bumper most probably would be painted in my garage. As far as expectations go I'd be happy with a fair job. This car is used to take him to college and back home.

That's not a lot of capacity, but if it's just a bumper...

I'd look into a low volume low pressure (lvlp) gun. That compressor won't have near enough CFM to properly power an HVLP gun and get good atomization.

I think a fair job is all you'd be getting out of 8 gallons.
