spring compressor use Am i stupid or what?

I cut 1 coil off the front springs(new) and used the inside spring compressor to compress them to installl.I got the cut springs in and install the ball joints but now i see the passenger side the end of the spring is not sitting in its pocket .Its about an inch away, the drivers side is ok.here is where it gets ugly.I cant compress the spring with the inside spring compressor now that the spring is in ,i put the top part all the way up then install the lower part then thread the rod.but every time i rachet the spring compressor both the top and bottom hooks come together before they compress, i hope you understand what im trying to describe.thanks mike

Does your car have lower A-arms and not some type of independent suspension?

If so make your own spring compressor. It's not hard.

I use 1/2" threaded rod. You cut a pice about 30" or so. Then you jam two nuts together at one end.

I use a piece of steel about 1/2"x3"x8" that I drilled a hole at almost dead center. This I stick inside the spring but you can also place it under the lower A-arm.

You want to stick the threaded rod up through the spring and top shock hole. Thread a nut on it and start tightening down. If you use a rachet or impact gun the work goes faster. After you draw the spring up into the spring pocket you can take the ball joints loose, then just unscrew the threaded rod. The spring should release without any incident.

Ya What rj57b said about the plate..... except

1/2 in all-thread rod is a disaster waiting to happen..... if it pops. Use 3/4.

I would put a long rod against the end of the spring coil where it is not in the pocket and wack the rod with a hammer turning the spring til it pops in. Suspension extended of course.
