Engineczar; I'll do that and all the other good tips. Tomorrow I'm going down the Lafayette, LA. to see whats left of our place, after the hurricane hit it dead on. It's a great life if you don't weaken!

Summit and Amazon have several books on sbc engines. Wish I'd read one. Lol.

I can't imagine a bearing making a "squark" sound? They have only made varying sounds like "knock" or "rattle" in my experience. Now a flywheel rubbing the inspection cover, that could sound like a "squark"? I wouldn't be so quick to condemn the motor, can you get under the engine to listen while it's running? Be careful or use a stethoscope or long rod held to your ear to reach.

I would take some time to pinpoint the sound before tearing into the engine.

unless you got the crank out and miked and it's bad why would you replace it? my old 305 had a spun bearing and knocked like hell. one thing i've been told by my machinist is that everybody aline hones, which i did, which is not nearly as good as line boring, which he does exclusively. we miked my holes and they were good, but who knows what it would cause if it was line honed and not miked. good luck on the tear down, then all the guess work will stop
