ss urethane or bc/cc

Hello.
I have decided to graduate from spraying acrylic enemal and move on. With this car i am going to paint light yellow (no metal flake). I am not sure whether to use single stage urethane or base coat clear coat. Will the bc/cc give a much greater shine? Also, with the primer is 4oo wet sanding enough or should i go to 600? I look forward to your thoughts.

400 wet will be fine for the color you're shooting, if it were a metalic color you'd definatly want to go with 600. Clearcoat IMO gives a little better shine but a singlestage also works well in solid colors-the choice is yours. If you've shot acrylic enamel you'll do fine with either system. The single stage will save you a few $$ compared to BC/CC and you can also clearcoat singlestage if desired, making a very durable finish.

I agree with Baddbob. What color primer are you using. A white sealer would be best. It will make your yellow seem brighter.

If you plan on spraying clear over the SS, it would be best just go use a Base coat and then clear coat. It's easier sanding out any problems with the clear coat, than it is with single stage.

White base

When shooting a yellow or orange..definitely positively shoot those over a white base as those colors do not hide like some of the others..

I would go BC/CC on that..better color choices are available in BC/CC than in single stage..

ss urethane or bc/cc

I am spraying a nason (421-17) primer that is kind of a light tan in color. I appreciate the tip on the white sealer. Does anyone have favorites on brands of bc/cc? I thought about shooting Imron ss, but that with the activator was about $300 per gallon. I think you can get a nice bc/cc for that. Thanks again for the help.

Bill

I've used Nason and have very good results with it as a bc. But when it comes to the clear-- you can ask 12 painters which they prefer, and you'll get 12 different answers.

There are a lot of clears available both at your supplier and the net.

When it comes to clear, you have to pick one and practice with it. I have used Transtar, 4Extreme, SPI, Nason, Dupont. They have all worked well for me.
