stainless steel??

i'm working on a 1980 Jeep CJ7, cutting out some rust spots on the sides.
i was wondering if its alright to weld SS in place of the old sheet metal.
guess what i'm asking is, will the bondo and paint have any problems sticking to it?

thanks Aaron

Welding S.Stl. to regular C.Stl. is not the easiest welding. Other problems come about too. The weld will be brittle and prone to cracking. Also there "may" be a problem with corrosion because of dissimilar metals (S.Stl & C. Stl), normal require a dia-electric connection between them, but you want to directly connect with the weld. I would suggest to use C.Stl instead of the S.Stl. and seal it real good with a good rust fighting primer like zinc chromate. My $0.02, Good Luck! ...Mark

If stainless steel is all you have, it will work just fine. You should use Stainless filler material to weld it but mild steel will also work. When I was welding in a Navy shipyard they recomended that will do rust repair useing stainless rod. As far as painting is concerned, if you use a self etching primer you will be in good shape.
I'm just assuming that you do not plan to gas weld the stainless because you will need a Dillon torch to pull that off.

Use TIG or MIG and 309 wire for ss to cs. It will work ok. I wouldn't do it but it should work. There won't be any chemical reaction between the two. I used to weld it all the time..No biggie..GlennK
