Converters will do one of twos things..... the RPM stall gets low or higher.....If the converter is equipped with a sprag and this fails there will be a RPM change in how the converter stalls & acts.

In some cases the transmission of power stops completely.

Not too often the converter actually explodes , but it has happened.

hehe.. well actually, 1 sentence is sufficent for a 1 sentence reply.. for example...

Q "how can you tell when your stall converter is going out?"

A "when it no longer works correctly!"

but the 3 most obvious indicators would be..
1.. the trans is getting loaded with metal particles, and
2.. the stall is getting higher, and
3.. noises that shouldn't be.
