Question Stall Converter

Ok guys...someone please explain to me how a stall converter works. I know motors but not trannys...I'm completly dumpfounded when it comes to transmissions so someone please tell me what this thing does..the converter, not the tranny, I think I can figure that one out.

Well Chuck could probably give you the specifics but I'll give it a shot. The torque converter is a 'fluid coupler', I think that's what the term is. When the engine spins the flywheel the converter spins 'cause it's bolted to the flywheel. Inside the converter are fins/blades that act like impellers (I think that's the word I'm looking for). The fins attached to the outside crate a force to spin the ones attached to the center section (which is connected to the input shaft of trans). By changing the fins you can alter how fast the outer set (engine rpm's) needs to spin before enough pressure is achieved to spin the inner set. If I had a manual I could probably provide names of internal parts and double check info. but it's 11:18pm and I'm tired. I think I'm close though, if not I'm sure I'll be corrected .
