stall converter or transmission problems

I have a 67 chevy short wheel base truck which has built from scratch. it has a 67 corvette 327/385 horse engine with disc brakes all the way around. electric cooling fan. have a 400 transmission with 3800 stall convertor with 373 positive rear end. it has been park for almost a year now because i dont know what it is the transmission or stall converter. when it did run it would run perfect for about 20 minutes then the transmission would go out. it would not move. then it cool off and run again. now when i crank it and let it idle in the yard and then put it in gear the truck dies. can somebody please help me and let me know whats the problem. one more thing the transmission fluid is black and i know thats a bad sign.

tranny problems

i have alot of experience with GM trannys and there hard to diagnose just by hearing a few symtoms. but it's weird it sounds like the first problem you had was with the tranny end of it, and the second symtom was the convertor. which ever it is it sounds like a rebuild is in the cards. if it was me i would NOT use a convertor with that much stall the last 400 i used i put a t-350 convertor in it. they interchange but the 350 has a higher stall than a stock 400. mine was behind a 350 horse small block and it worked great. as far as getting off cheaper with a good rebuild look for a good size transmission parts house and ask them if they recommend anyone. the one where i live has a few they recommend that have done them long enough to know there not a fly-by-night,there rep. is on the line and so they'll steer you right and it's a cheaper way to go. good luck

re: stall

Hey bigtank05, this is deno. the stall is to high. 3800 is for cars with 900 HP. You should use a B&M #BMM-20412 2300-2500 STALL. I have a 3200 stall in my Camaro. 700 HP. With a supercharger. Thanks deno----
