standard vs high volume oil pump in 555 bbc

I am wondering if I should run a std or high volume pump in my full roller dart 555 bbc. Its a street/strip motor. Ive heard std would be fine but high volume is a better choice.

If you have wide bearing clearances a HV would help maintain pressure, otherwise I would go with a standard pump, JMO. I've heard pros and cons about a HV sucking sumps pretty bad, consider a deep pan.

It depends on how the engine was set up on build. Loose bearing clearance and other maxed out specs. will require HV pump.

I try to avoid them. If not done properly. They can cause cam wear problems on flat tappet engines. Both at the front thrust surface and the pump drive.

You can modify a BBC pump to dump the pressure relief back to the pan rather than cavitate it in the pump body. Then the load on everything is the same until the oil system needs the extra volume.

SBC's and BBC's have excellent oiling systems. A standard pump with a GOOD filter, such as a NAPA Gold, and quality synthetic oil, should get you all of the oil pressure you need. That old saying of 10lbs of pressure for every 1000rpm holds true. Anything over that and you are sucking extra hp to drive the pump. I had an old sbc with a high volume pump and on a cold start it would shoot up to well over what the gauge would read, lol. Gauge went to 80 iirc. At a hot idle at 850rpm it would have 40lbs. I thought it was awesome, lol. Little did I know I was losing power.

HV pumps on averge can rob you of almost 10hp, if there is no need for a HV pump as mentioned usees for one, almost always a standard pump is the best choice..
