I think my starter is going. When the engine gets hot it will do nothing. I got stuck at a show once. I turned the key and not even a click. Got a jump and started right away. Last night turned the key nothing, after doing the key 4 times it started. Do you think it is the starter solenoid? Also I started looking at starters I have a 71 350 with straight bolts. What is the difference in a starter that covers half the gear and one that does not?

Here's a neat little trick that has saved me lots of aggravation on my 67 camaro with a built up 383. Install a Ford starter solinoid next to the battery and run the wire down to your Chevy starter. To do so you'll have to jumper the 2 big wires on your Chevy starter solinoid. Connect the wire from the Ford solinoid to the top big wire on the Chevy solinoid. Run the small wire from your Chevy ignition switch to the small wire on the Ford solinoid. I used to replace one or two solinoids a year and since I installed the ford solinoid I haven't replaced one in the last 3 years with an engine that makes lots more horsepower and throws off lots more heat than it used to.

I had the same problem with my Olds. Tried all kinds of blankets, insulators,
new battery, new battery wires, connectors and who knows what else through the years. Finally put a Ford solenoid in the system and haven't had a problem since! MAD makes a handy kit with everything you need. but you don't really need the kit to make the swap.
