How do you check to see if your starter silinoid is bad? On a 85 chevy 350

Connect a jumper from the battery + post to the S terminal on the solenoid.
If you get a loud click (thunk) noise and the starter cranks (whawhawha) the solenoid is OK.
If not there are several other that could be wrong.

Here's how I'd do it.

Use a volt meter and make sure you are getting 12v at the starter (large cable from the battery) If no 12v.... clean or replace battery cable.

If you are getting 12v at the starter..... make sure it's in park and use a screw driver and jump across the large pos stud on the starter and the smaller one marked "S" you should hear a metallic click and the starter should turn the engine over, If no click or spin ...... remove the starter and take it to a auto parts store for testing.

If it spins, but doesn't turn the engine over..... it's probably the bendix/solenoid

I tried starting it with the screw driver and it was making electrical pops an sparks.. No movement tho.. I replaced it and that didn't fix it

It's prob a bad starter, it could be improperly shimmed but if that were the case you should get some movement. I'd pull it and get it tested, the old jumper cable while on the ground trick doesn't put a load on the motor so I wouldn't trust that method, beat myself up for a week doing that trick....... ended up taking it in and sure enough it was a bad starter
