My 71 truck starter went out. I went underneath the truck and there were only two wire hooked up. I think there should be three: Hot wire (battery); green wire (ignition) and black wire for ground. Am I right.

Doc here,

No..

Main battery cable, to main solenoid bolt..and (usually) a 10 gauge wire fuse link to the fuse buss and alternator..

The "Start" wire to the "s" Terminal on the far left.

The Secondary Ignition (if so used) to the "R" or "I" terminal on the far right.

Ground is achieved through the mechanical mounting of the starter and / or mount bracket on the rear (some have it , some don't)

You should be able to test start it by jumping the "s" terminal to the main bolt terminal with a remote start button (or , and I DIDN"T say this..a screwdriver..) and it should crank.

............................................................................
