Starter 99 Tahoe
I have a 99 Tahoe and put in a new starter but it won't shut off when I turn it over. Turns motor good but will not shut off until Batt is unhooked. Does the ignition have anything to do with disengaging the starter. Ig is not hooked up yet????

The ignition will need to be hooked up so the car starts. That is a squirrelly system that I still dont understand.I guess it Is a kind of shunt system, where as the starter will stay engaged untill the engine starts, at wich time the current demand of the starter drops so does the current running through it, allowing the shunt circuit to drop out.I have noticed on these that you can turn the key to start and immediatley let the key back to run and the starter will crank untill the engine starts. Not sure if shunt is what you call it, it is one of GMs better Ideas...
