starter fitting problems

I have a 76 nova and i just recently had to swap the original 250 w/ integrated intake to a 1970 250 i already looked up the casting numbers and it said it was cast in december of 1970 and i bought a new 168 tooth flywheel and a starter to bolt up on the '70 250 but it wont bolt up because the flywheel is hitting the nose cone and the pinion on the starter any ideas?

I'll bet the starter is for a 153 tooth flywheel. Maybe just boxed wrong?

Are you trying to install the flywheel with the starter bolted in?

Does the flywheel hit against the inside of the nose cone?

Shim the starter down a little to see if it will clear.

i cant even get it close enough to bolt it on with the 153 or the 168
is there supposed to some sort of spacer block or something like that?

So where does it hit the flywheel exactly on the starter?

I put a starter off of a 350 and used the drill guide from Leo Santucci's book and it turned right over =D
