starter to flexplate gear spec

Hello.. while going down my check list. I got to thinking(dangerous)
that while the engines out. I'd check the clearance of the starter drive and ring gear.. is their a clearance spec.. or is it just go/no go
it's a sbc and I'd rather get it fitted with shims if needed before it's all in and headers on and get that lovely screach that grinding metal makes..
figure 10 minutes now. is worth the headache later after it's all buttoned up. and have to drop the starter/headers/etc to add a shim..

I've always used the paper clip method, with the gear engaged a standard paper clip, straightened out, should slip between the high point and tooth valley, however many thousandths that is.
I'm the one your momma never told you about...
