Post Starter gear to flexplate gap on SBC

What is the standard gap expected between the starter gear and the flexplate for a SBC? I'm not asking about gear mesh, but the gap when the starter is not engaged. I just installed a new flexplate and starter and the gap looks to be only about .030". That sure looks too close for normal operation.

HI 32VIC, THE GAP ON G.M. STARTERS>>FLYWHEEL TO STARTER PINION IS .035" 35thou THE THICKNESS OF A COMMON PAPERCLIP!
YOU CAN SHIM THEM IF YOUR GAPS TOO WIDE
SHIMS GO BETWEEN STARTER MOTOR + MOUNTING HOLES.
HAVE FUN PHIL

I'm always worrying about the wrong thing. I was concerned about the gap when I should have been worrying about this brand new starter that had a bad solonoid. Gaps don't mean a thing if you can't start the engine.
