Starter GRINDING!?!?!?!

so i have a 78 chevy cheyenne thtruck runs great and drives great but the starter is makin me rip my hair out. I have tried shimming it, shaving it, replaced wires. i Put a new starter in and it is fixed for the first 3 times i start it than grinds. If i crawl under it when its grinding and loosen than tighten the starter bolts it will fire right up with out a noise but it progresses. i have gone through 6 starters that it has physically broken to where i climb under it and the casings loose and the housings cracked. most recently the starter bolt randomly broke and fell out in the driveway???? please help as it is the only thing wrong with my beautiful truck sorry its so long thanks for a reply

Do you have the front bracket? This is bolted from the top starter through bolt to the side of the block.

when did this problem start? after you put on a new starter ? change the engine and use different flex plate? Wich flex plate do you have? What is the starter bolt pattern ? is it straight across,? staggered ? 153 tooth flex or 168 tooth?
