I read your post last night and checked through my 1930's and 40's manuals and couldn't find anything ...yet. I just stripped a '40 Desoto a few years ago, but pulled the whole power train as a unit. However, on the Model T, there is a cover that bolts to the back of the bellhousing to cover the Bendix. On the T that needed to be removed so the bendix could be removed, that's the only way the starter would come out. The bendix, as was common at the time, was on the back side of the flywheel and was pulled forward instead of pushed back. The diameter of the bendix made the starter unable to come out with the Bendix on the motor.

I checked around on some of my favorite sites but could not find any info. You might try the forum at the Inliners International site. It is devoted to all inline motor lovers. What motor does your Chrysler have - a six or eight?

Sometimes logic and experience is not the answer. Bet he thinks he is the "king" around there now. The two of you will talk about that for years. Great for bonding.
