Starter help. Can you make a new starter old?

I have a bit of a dilemma and figure you guys would be the best to help me.
I have a 4.3L Mercruiser engine(chevy 262) in my boat and I have a badly cracked starter mount hole. I have read too many horror stories about welding and JB welding it. And mine is cracked on two sides top to bottom. Not really sure what's holding it on.
So I've decided to try the plate that goes around the bellhousing I saw on Danchuk
Now my dilemma.
I need a starter that can mount to that plate and is safe to use in a boat.
I have the offset two bolt marine starter. Does anyone know if you can swap the front of a new starter to one of a 1955 or '56 so it will mount on the plate?
Or is there some conversion kit so guys can use new starters on old cars?
Thanks. Jordan.

yes, the nose cones can be swapped. some blocks also have 3 bolts for the starters that mount with the bolts straight or offset.
