Starter just spins.
I have a mini starter on my 383. From a Lt1 engine. Anyway its been starting great, but yesterday I started to hear a little clashing of metal when starting. I went for a drive and then all the starter would do is spin. I got under the car tonight to see what was going on and had my wife turn it over. The starter would stick its little pecker (bendix) into the flywheel but it will turn just enough until the side of the gear touches the flywheel and wont go any further. Also the starter is fairly loose now. It was tight before i swapped my 700r to a t56 a couple mnths ago. Could a shim have come out or something? Also if i do just reshim it, something is wrong the bendix since its acting like its binding right? thanks for the answers guys, youve helped me out a lot.

Did you tighten it back up? Shims won't fall out as there is a hole on one end and a slot on the other.
As the starter comes loose, the back of it will drop and the bendix gear will not engauge the flywheel correctly.
Tighten it up and see what happens. :D

I dont know how i missed this, but i looked at it again a few hours ago. The cone of the Lt1 starter looks like a grenade went off around it. Is all cracked and part of its missing. The bindex is bent and both of the bolts are slightly bent. I have another starter, but its to big because of the headers. I guess ill just have to buy another starter now. The flywheel has absolutely no damage at all. Thank you lord!

And new bolts! Don't forget those. If the old ones are bent, toss them. :D

Yeah they are pretty fubared lol. I tried the other starter I have, but its too big to clear the headers. I was thinking of buying this starter:

it looks like a real denso starter
