Starter problems

I'm working on a 68 GTO, and the starter has me a bit confused. I bought a mini pro-torque starter, and it still has the two posts for the starter wires. I have 3 wires all together and the only way I can get the motor to turn over is when I have the key in the "Run" position. I have tried hooking it up any way I can and it either does nothing, or starts too early. Please help me finish my 4 year rebuild.

When you say you have three wires altogether do you mean you have two small wires and the large cable?

Yes, and even when I just have the positive battery cable and the small ignition wire hooked up it does the same thing. The third one I have no idea where it comes from, but it was taped up like it had been cut and spliced. Compared to the size of the other wires, this third one is in between. Bigger then small one, smaller than the battery cable.

The wire from the ignition switch has to come from the "start" terminal and not the "run" and this connects to the "start" (probably ST if marked at all) on the starter solenoid on the stater. That other wire (assuming it is not the "start" wire from the ignition) goes to the positive side of the ignition coil. It provides full system voltage to the coil during start on the original ignition system. Do you still have the stock ignition system?

If the starter is engaging when you turn the key to "on" you either have the wrong wire from ignition switch going to the starter or possibly it is feeding back from an improper connection of the by pass wire to the coil, assuming you have a standard coil and not HEI. Describe as best you can how you have the circuit run from the ign switch to both the starter and the ignition (distributor/coil).
