starter problems

This starter has got me bummed out. I pulled it out to put in a new tranny in my 90 Chevy full size, and when I put it back in in a hurry, I had the wire turned up toward the exhaust manifold to where it was hitting it when I hit bumps. It was turning off everything, my injectors and dash and all. So anyways, I fixed that, and now I have a new problem. Now, my starter doesn't want to work when it's hot. I figured that I probably shorted something in the starter, but I put a brand new one in(just $30, no biggee). Same thing. It sounds like the bendix gear isn't wanting to go up to the flywheel, just spinning. It starts fine if it's been sitting for a while, just doesn't start if I drive for a while and shut it off. I haven't ever personally heard of this problem, so please give me some insight.

Do a search on "hot start problem". This will explain the issue of trying to start the car after driving it,

I had the same problem on my 67 Camaro. An external solenoid from Jegs fixed the problem.

After the rebate for the core charge at Advance, it's only 30 bucks.

starter problems

Not to but in but, I had starter problems last week on my 350 powered Samurai . They all dragged , may sound stupid but: timing was off , even put on mini starter because the big one were an 8th inch from exhaust. Now on my Chevy truck I cant get it to engage smoothly for nothing. Tried every shim size, at this time I have a washer on one side to shim and it is doing the best but still sounds bad. I just put on a new flywheel and hate to have to pull tranny again. When I bought the truck the flywheel and starter were screwed. I had a problem a long time ago on a 55 Chevy 11to 1 compression, new starters were not engaging good. A good mechanic told me go to Napa to buy a quality starter, I did and it was smooth as silk. I try to get by as cheap as I can but this is getting rough.

I forgot to ask: I hear about all this Ford remote solenoid stuff. If that solves the hot start problems , what about the starter it self , doesnt it get hot enough too to cause a problem?

Thanks for butting in, Musky. I too tried shimming the starter every way I could, with no luck. My big starter is a few inches from the manifold, so I'm going to put in a heat shield to be safe, but I don't think it's going to solve the problem. I can check my timing, because that does sound like a feasible solution. How much do the "good" starters from Napa cost? Thanks again, just asking some questions before I go out and replace every single thing under the hood before I find out what the problem is. About the Ford solenoid, I've heard good stuff about them too, but no experience with them.

starter problems

They say you get what you pay for! Sometimes its true. I do alot of junk yard searching and find great deals, sometimes things work out good and sometimes I just have to eat what I find. I pick up starters, alternators ,and Holleys etc. for a few dollars; if they work good thats great and if they dont they are good for rebuilding or trade ins. Of course I have alot of extra labor installing used stuff but I still feel Im ahead of the game money wise. Even parts from the auto parts places dont always work out satisfactorily. I just went through the starter delima on my 350 powered Susuki jeep and now Im going to try again to solve the problem on my 82 Chevy truck. 1st you must know you have a strong battery, 2nd you have to have good connections
on battery and a couple good grounds ( negative cable to engine , engine to fire wall or frame and if possible from starter to engine) . bad connections are usually the culprit with cranking an automobile . I dont know it all but I know this for sure and hope this helps out some beginners " check all connections" thanks Musky2

I forgot : Im not sure on price of Napa starter ; its been years ago , but it solved the problem of engagement on a high compression engine I had. The cheap starters just kept grinding. Sometime you just have to shell out the hard earned cash to solve a problem. I bet if you buy a top quality starter it will solve your problem and will save you all the headaches. I put a mini starter on my Samurai ( 350 Chevy I dont know if it was needed because it dragged too but when I was ready to give up I turned the timing back and it whips over like crazy now.So the mini starter is on there and Ill just leave it. I was going to buy a new mini starter when that one was dragging but like I said it was the timing. The guy at Auto Zone or Advance said come talk to him and he would let me have one for 48 dollars and I could trade in a regular big starter in trade. If you can get one for that deal you would be in good shape. Call around.

Sounds like typical hot start failure. Have you check timing and shimmed the starter?
Hot start relay kit will help but check out your grounds on the starter fresh paint is a poor conductor remove a little and use a star washer..
