starter question

im not sure exactly where to post this,i posted this in electrical too. its kinda a starter question....i currently have a 305 w/ a 700r4 in my 92 camaro...hopefully this weekend i will be plucking it out and replacing it with a fresh 383 (its been in the works for a while) the 400 flexplate is a 168 tooth. i was wondering if someone might know if the starter that is currently in my car will work? im not sure if the 305 comes with a 153 or 168 tooth flexplate....and if it does have a 153 tooth, is there some way i can make it work or do i need to go get another one....this starter is working nice....only pulls about 140 amps consatnt....plus in pretty broke(darn gas prices) any help will be appreciated

I really dought that 305 starter will crank a 383. esp when the temp is up. You will most likely need a gear reduction starter at minimum.

You can make the 305 starter work by changing the housing on the back of the starter for the one you need.

The 305 may have the 168 tooth ring gear, in which case it will bolt up as is.

Sorry to be the one to give ya the bad news, but the 305 in your 92 camaro had the 153 tooth flywheel. That starter will not work with your 168 tooth flywheel on your 383. Also depending on the brand and type of headers your using you might even have clearance issues using the stock 350 starter. Its a pretty tight fit with that larger flywheel. If your using the hooker longtube headers for that car there's no question your gonna have to use a mini starter.

If you find you can use the bigger stock starter definetly go with the hi-torque model.

the starter nose's are interchangeable.swap the 305 for the 400 starter nose and you're set.there is a difference of .625" in the mounting locations and they used the chageable nose's for the cure.

Be advised that if you go with the Delco style mini starter that has permanent magnets they have an annoying trait. Due to the fact that the field coil has been eliminated with permanent magnets the bendix will not disengage as fast as a traditional starter. This results in a rather rude sound as the engine starts and the bendix overspeeds until it disengages. I have been told this is not harmfull, but I wonder if all GM mini starters do this.
