Starter questions

Hey all,

I had just bought a starter from a local junkyard and when i bought it, the original starter i had was for a 1975 chevy sb 350 (which is what year my motor is also). The starter that the guy from the junkyard gave me was off a 1985 chevy sb 350. When i bought the starter, the guy took the solenoid off of my 1975 starter, and but it on the 1985 starter. My questions are this: would a solenoid off of a 1975 chevy 350 starter work on a 1985 chevy 350 starter? Also woulda starter from a 1985 chevy 350 work on a 1975 chevy 350? thanks all

As long as there the same bolt pattern. There were 2 patterns, the straight pattern starter went to the small diameter 153 tooth flywheel, the staggerd bolt pattern starter went to the large diameter 168 tooth flywheel.

Yeah, they are the same bolt patterns.....do you know if the solenoids are any different? The problem is the starter will engage but not spin, but i bypassed the solenoid and the starter spun just fine. So im assuming maybe its the incorrect solenoid, or the solenoid i have is getting weak (it was from autozone :-p)

This is probably a stupid question, but what shape is your battery in? Awhile back, me and a buddy were trying to put together a starter for a sbc out of several pails of parts, and nothing would work, not spin, or even kick out. Went to start the truck we were using to test the starter's with, and would'nt ya know it, the battery was stone dead. Found a good battery, started my truck, and then tested the last starter build, and it worked great. Moral of the story, check the battery first, it's the easiest.

Sounds like the solenoid is bad..................

BTW, Chevy starters and solenoids have been interchangable for many years........as said, has to be the right bolt pattern.

i believe the only difference would be the electric lugs ... 2 or 3,
and then is you have the 2 wire set up it still wont matter.

did you have this problem last week this seems very familiar?

Alright, good, ill get another solenoid then today. Rob: The problem i was having before was having to shim the starter a large amount, so i figured the casting was messed up so i got another starter from the junkyard.
