starter shiming due to align boring?
ever since i had my block align bored i have to shim the out side edge of my starter to get the gears to mesh and its still loud, i dont dare shim it any more, i think the more angle i put on it the less starter touches the block and the weaker the connection between them is. I was thinking that if i found an old starter that fit and milled the mounting pad down a bit then shimmed it back to fit i might get a better connection. any thoughts or has anyone else had this problem? with all the work i have in this engine the loud starter is embarrassing. thanks.

What engine is it? 400 SBC's are notorious for starters needing shims. Modified block or not.

One thing to try also is to get a cast iron nose starter instead of aluminum or steel nose like most of them. I had this problem on my rebuilt 350. The cast iron nose starters are 1/8th of an inch closer to the flywheel from the starter shaft centerline( At least the ones we measured at the parts store were)
